Don’t call me Sir, or Madam!

After years of advising our clients on the correct way to address an employment tribunal, it’s now all change!

The Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, and Senior President of Tribunals, announced on 1 December 2022 that in future all Employment Tribunal Judges and Employment Appeal Tribunal Judges are not to be addressed as ‘Sir/Madam’, but rather as ‘Judge’.

The reason for this change, they advise, is to “reflect the important judicial role whilst maintaining the necessary degree of respect”.

Wing members of a tribunal should still be addressed as Sir/Madam.
