Acas has published a new report, Estimating the Costs of Workplace Conflict. The report estimates there to be an average of 374,760 formal grievances made each year, and the average cost in management time of each of these is estimated to be £951. Formal disciplinary cases, of which there are an estimated 1.7 million, cost on average £1,141 per case. An estimated 485,800 employees resign each year as a result of conflict.
The report concludes that it is important to acknowledge that not all the costs of conflict can be avoided even with effective management, but that investment in effective and early resolution designed to build positive employment relationships can have a very significant return.
