Not paying NMW will be more expensive

From today employers who fail to pay the National Minimum Wage (NMW) will face a fine of up to £20,000, a fourfold increase from the previous cap of £5,000.

The financial penalty will be 100 per cent, previously 50 per cent, of the unpaid wages owed to the workers with the new higher cap.

The Government has already said that they intend to legislate “at the earliest opportunity” so that the penalties of up to £20,000 will apply to each worker who has been underpaid rather than a single fine for each employer
