Right to Work - Adjusted Checks

Just a quick reminder that adjustments to right to work checks, introduced on 30 March 2020 in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, will end on 30 September 2022.

From 1 October 2022, one of the prescribed checks below must be carried out before before employment commences.

  • A manual right to work check
  • A right to work check using IDVT via the services of an identity service provider (IDSP)
  • A Home Office online right to work check

Right to work checks may still be undertaken remotely for British and Irish citizens who hold a valid passport (or Irish passport card), using the Identification Document Validation Technology (IDVT).

The Home Office online checking service does not require a physical check of documents, and can be carried out by video call, as right to work information is provided in real time direct from Home Office systems.

There is no requirement to carry out retrospective checks on individuals who had an adjusted check between 30 March 2020 and 30 September 2022.
